Getting your driving licence in Albania

The licence process

1. Check eligibility and choose a licensed driving school

   The minimum age for Category B is 18. Enrol with a licensed driving school, which handles registration with the regional road transport service (DRSHTRR).

2. Prepare your documents

   For first-time theory registration, the school submits your identification document copy, a driver medical certificate with photograph, and its fiscal invoice. Foreign applicants have additional passport and residence-permit requirements. Ask the school to confirm its enrolment and photograph requirements.

3. Complete the approved training

   DPSHTRR’s published Category B programme specifies 36 theory hours, 25 practical sessions and 6 additional mandatory driving hours. A practical session lasts at least 40 minutes; sessions are not the same as hours.

4. Complete first aid and take the theory exam

   For first-time issuance, DPSHTRR requires proof of first-aid training unless you qualify for its medicine/nursing graduate exemption. Bring valid ID and your DD/T theory permit. The computerised exam has 40 questions, a maximum of 40 minutes and no more than 4 errors (90% correct).

5. Take the practical test

   The driving school registers you for the practical stage. Attend with your instructor and the test vehicle, carrying valid ID and the DD/P practical authorisation. This is a separate test of your driving skills, not another theory quiz.

6. Apply for your licence after passing

   After passing the practical test, follow DRSHTRR’s procedure to apply for your driving licence. Confirm current documents, appointment availability and fees directly with DPSHTRR or your driving school.
